Lambda Chi Alpha

Pittsburg State University

Pittsburg, Kansas

We believe in Lambda Chi Alpha, and its traditions, principles, and ideals. The crescent is our symbol — pure, high, and ever growing; and the cross is our guide — denoting service, sacrifice, and even suffering and humiliation before the world, bravely endured if need be, in following that ideal.

May we have faith in Lambda Chi Alpha and passion for its welfare. May we have hope for the future of Lambda Chi Alpha and strength to fight for its teachings. May we have pure hearts, that we may approach the ideal of perfect brotherly love.

Questions

TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!  John Belusci was hilarious in Animal House, but Hollywood’s version of a fraternity is very different than the oldest student based leadership group in the country.  How can you tell the difference?  Start by asking the right questions.  At Lambda Chi Alpha, we can help you.

What is a fraternity?

A fraternity is a student organization, which is recognized by the university, comprised of males who share common principles and ideals.  The original fraternities were started over 150 years ago by students who chose to uphold key values, so its no surprise that most fraternities stand for chivalry, integrity, academic success, and social responsibility.  True, some fraternities have slacked in maintaining those ideals.  However, Lambda Chi Alpha still cares about our core values.

What does a fraternity do?

A fraternity provides a home “away from home” environment for you son, whether he lives in the house or not.  It’s a group that he can identify with and give him a sense of belonging on campus.  Somewhere along the way, a fraternity will allow him to grow and mature socially and emotionally, while preparing him for the real world.  Each group, or chapter, has elected officials who help lead their peers.  Together, the select philanthropies, organize social events, and participate in a wide range of collegiate activities.  At Pittsburg State University, most fraternities also offer a place to live.  Lambda Chi Alpha members come as far away from Colorado, Arkansas, and even California.

Isn’t a Dorm going to the same thing?

Dorms provide a living environment and give residents a sense of belonging, but don’t really offer higher purposes.  They never hold reunions or provide valuable networking to place residents in jobs.  In other words, the Dorm experience is limited to the college years.  At Lambda Chi Alpha, you’re not a member for four years; you’re a brother for life.

What about grades?

All fraternities are student organizations an as such, each fraternity member must maintain a minimum GPA in order to remain a student at Pittsburg State.  Lambda Chi Alpha is consistently over the average PSU student GPA, normally close to a 3.0 collectively.  We have a variety of study programs to help our members keep their grades up, including study room hours, big brother tutors, and library nights.  The hardest part of a freshman’s first year is balancing school, social life, and being away from home.  At Lambda Chi Alpha, we will not only help you’re son, but want him to succeed.

What’s so special about Lambda Chi Alpha?

In 1972, Lambda Chi Alpha abolished “pledging,” with the Associate member program.  Associates have the same rights and privileges as initiated members.  They can attend chapter meetings and functions, vote and can even hold office.  There are no stupid tasks or stunts that new members perform in order to join.  Locally, the Pittsburg State chapter has been active for over 40 years and has initiated over 670 members.

What does it cost?

Lambda Chi Alpha currently has the lowest dues of any fraternity at Pittsburg State.  The Associate semester is the most expensive semester at $450.  The dues cover insurance, association costs, and initiation costs.  After the first semester, dues are $45/month for in house members and $60/month for out-of-house members.

Alumni Connections

With close to 700 brothers initiated at PSU since we were founded, Lambda Chi Alpha has many brothers placed in almost all levels of business, medical professions, construction, technology, and many more professions.  Our chapter has an active alumni association, that includes an Advisory Board and a Housing Corporation.

How does my son join?

In order to make sure that your son will connect with his fraternity brothers, he should try to meet as many of them as possible before he joins.  Lambda Chi Alpha holds many summer events that he may attend.  These events are put on locally for many PSU students interested in fraternities.  Once the brothers get to know him, they will offer him an invitation, also known as a “bid.”  To join, he simply accepts the bid.  For more information, place contact our Recruitment Chairman, Ben Ferraro at 620-762-1762.
